"It certainly didn’t go how I expected it to, once we were 2-0 down.
The game-plan was to defend the wind during that first-half and stay in the game, knowing we could score goals and upset them later with the wind behind us. We didn’t retain the ball well enough though and it caused us to handle more pressure than we wanted to and we also gifted them one of their two goals in the first-half.
The lads were told at half-time that we should go for it for there was nothing to lose. The only thing we needed to do was to play to the standards we had set and not like we had done during the first-half. I couldn’t fault the lads' effort in that second period and we deserved to take Bottesford to extra-time.
In the first-half of extra-time, we changed our shape to try and soak up 15mins of pressure, so we could then go at them again. That plan was working until they scored straight from a corner and then we had one of our strikers sent off for a foul on their goalie. Personally, from my point of view, he was being fouled in the build-up to it but you win some, you lose some. He’ll be a big loss for the replay, however.
In the second-half of extra-time, the shape had to change due to us going down to ten men but our goal was still the same and we went for it as best we could. To get the equaliser was great and I really felt we could have nicked it at the end.
So a trip to Scunthorpe on a Wednesday night will be a new experience for all of us, which we look forward to. And I couldn’t be more proud of my lads' performance after the first half, which showed that on our day we can match teams from two leagues higher..."
