THE CARRION CROW AND THE EUROPEAN CHAFER BEETLE GRUBS: A NEW POEM...

The Carrion Crow And The European Chafer Beetle Grubs

Lunging black bill digs
And jabs and hacks
Into lawn’s coarse grass,
As beetle grubs are hunted;
Thrusting black neck drags
And bobs and hauls
A bayonet beak,

Straining black legs tense
And root and stomp
Upon ripped grass clumps,
As the garden spoils;
Flailing black wings fuss
And rap and flutter,
As prey is gouged:
Yet still the scavenger toils…

An October demolition of my front lawn by a pair of Carrion Crows.

They are digging for grass-root feeders European Chafer Beetle grubs, which have wrecked several lawns in the road.

A Cambridge University lawn has also been attacked, apparently…
