SAUVE MEMORIAL IN FRANCE: A NEW POEM...

Sauve Memorial

Behind the war memorial
An open window revealed
Brocante, vintage items jumbled
At the perimeter of Sauve’s small square…

The dedication’s pinnacle
A fighting cock revealed;
Wings in affray, its feathers ruffled,
Dissident beak cruel, sharp eyes a-glare…

The stark military figure
Stood at ease, revealed
A peaceful pride, expression humble,
Rifle rested, sad eyes gentle in wistful stare…

Sauve, Gard, France, September 2018.
The small brocante room was cluttered but the elderly lady inside sold us a cheese pot and two small snail pots…

The war memorial was a fine example from France…
