THE DUNNOCK: UNDERSTATED, UNDERRATED... ( A NEW POEM...)

The Dunnock:
Understated, Underrated…

Flying a descent rapidly across the garden,
The dunnock dives beneath bushes
To scatter leaves, twigs and detritus
In search of insects or seeds,
Whilst he scuttles, stutters and rushes…

Pithering shyly, aimlessly dithering,
Scurrying carelessly, constantly worrying;
Sifting thoroughly, harshly lifting,
Scrabbling restlessly, perpetually scrambling;
Bustling openly, avidly rustling,
Rifling ardently, pettily trifling;
Striving busily, pointedly diving,
Searching dartingly, strikingly perching…

Appearing from between conifer’s branches,
The dunnock, at stage centre sings,
To alert finches, tits and pigeons
About his shy, understated presence,
Before swooping again with smart wings…
