Covid 19 Update From Solihull…
So yesterday, Thursday 24th September I walked to my local One Stop outlet on the Stratford Road to purchase a newspaper… I donned my mask. It’s what we have all been recommended to do. Despite being the first day of shop assistants wearing marks, the assistant, er, wore no mask.
Then in walked a young woman from a new store round the corner in Shakespeare Drive, ‘Bespoke Brows’ and she, presumably worked with customers’ eyebrows. She wore no mask. I had seen her previously during the week, again wearing no mask in-store. Hardly a sensible choice due to her line of work, I reckon…
Today, 25th September, after a masked parent and his young child left the store, I waited to be served, wearing my mask, as a chap wearing no mask was being dealt with. I then became aware suddenly, that of six customers in the shop, I was the only person with a face covering, including two mid-teens in Light Hall School’s uniforms…
The assistant wore no mask either… I mentioned that surely he should be wearing one. He said that the shop hadn’t yet issued him with one and he didn’t have one of his own…
I was shocked, annoyed and suddenly aware that folks who really are at risk during this pandemic might just be advised to avoid that store and let those who simply aren’t bothered, or don’t care, take their chances.
Looks like I might be shopping elsewhere from now on…
This came after another incident a couple of weeks ago, when an elderly chap who I know walked into the shop. We have always chatted but on this particular morning he wore no mask, neither did a woman who was actually being served in front of him. I called to him: “Where’s your mask?”
He retorted: “Forgot it.”
I suggested that he shouldn’t be in the shop without it and he replied that it was too late to return home and fetch it. Then, incredulously, he delved into his shopping bag and exclaimed: “Oh, it’s here!”
He didn’t put it on, though, merely laughed at himself…
The woman who was being served stared daggers at me.
I stared back…
