THE MINE ON THE LANDSCAPE: BOULBY, NORTH RIDING OF YORKSHIRE...

 The Mine On The Landscape

(Boulby, North Riding)

It appeared like the recurring nightmare

Of the Cornish china clay factory in Par:

A blot on a carefully written essay,

A monstrosity, an industrial calamity,

An alien depositary

Amongst agricultural farmland

And visible, unmissable from afar…

Agape, I realised that this impediment

Upon the Cleveland landscape

Might be visible from my accommodation,

As it loomed ominously larger and nearer

To the shepherd’s hut, my September escape…

But the mine was not visible

From the south side of Ridge Lane

And from that realisation

My relief was tangible,

As a steep wooded valley,

Fields, animals and grain

Appeared before me, its beauty apparent…

I really thought that there would be no getting away from the mine (which produces Polyhalite for use as fertiliser) but the shepherd’s hut in Staithes turned out to be ideally situated…

Par beach in Cornwall, near Fowey is spoilt at the western end by the ugliness of a china clay factory and docks and despite the general beauty of the seaside there, one’s eyes cannot help turning towards the monstrous industrial site…
