The Righting Of The Jackie McKay
(Staithes Harbour)
She leaned, listing to port
Upon the charcoal mud inside the quay,
Subdued, as if constricted, confined
And stranded, helplessly…
Then, as the murky tide sought entry
To the harbour’s extremities dull,
She was nudged, slightly disturbed
By the sea’s relentless hurry and shallow pull…
Then, rocking, barely perceptibly
She began to right herself afloat,
Shakily at first until proudly buoyant…
Though moored, she bobbed pertly,
A throbbing, vibrant fishing boat,
Her sunlit livery quite exuberant…
