THE STAND-OFF: A NEW POEM ABOUT GILL JANSEN'S FALMOUTH ARTWORK...

 The Stand-Off…

(from Gill Jansen’s painting about Falmouth…)

The fisherman barely notices the raucous gulls

Encircling his vessel, no doubt screaming

Hunger pangs at him, as the boat’s red hull

Lists in deference to the poppies, leaning

Hands deep in pockets, the Skipper stares in thrall,

Regarding his stranded dog upon the sand,

Wondering why it needs a beach-hut at all

And why it tarries, patiently, making a stand,

Inexplicably and stubbornly marooned upon the land…

The dog looks like it is in a stand-off with its fisherman owner, as if it has just changed out of its woollen bathing costume in one of the gaily coloured huts…

The black-backed gull has replaced the dog on the boat, it seems…
