HAMPTON FC 0-0 AFC COVENTRY RANGERS: THE MOWDOG'S HONEST, UNBIASED MATCH REPORT...

Untidy Encounter Fails To Produce Goals…

Hampton FC 0-0 AFC Coventry Rangers

The Mowdog’s thoughts…

This difficult to watch Midland League 2 contest was riddled with errors and lacked goalmouth incidents for the most part, although in truth, Rangers produced more offense, only to be thwarted by Hampton’s goalkeeper Dom Edwards who saved well from AFC’s Ryan Alexander and Curtis Cutts. Both Boggery central defenders, Conor Bird and skipper James Morris, performed with huge concentration and ability during the encounter.

Keeping AFC’s Fola Fagbemi quiet was no mean feat for Hampton but Rangers, despite maintaining a good deal of possession, failed to achieve much penetration in the attacking zones. This allowed the hosts to break a few times in the latter stages and in fairness, left-sided attacker Marcus Brookes was twice close to stealing a victory for Hampton.

Certainly the Hampton coaches enjoyed the match and told me so afterwards but despite being called a ‘purist’ as I walked away, I have to admit that from a reporter’s unbiased point of view, the blustery wind, the hard pitch and a good deal of inaccuracy displayed by both teams offered little in the way of entertainment. If your team has done well to achieve a point, then that is fine…

THE TOSS...

The Hampton offense…

Little was achieved before the break but after the recess, Brookes nodded wide from a centre by replacement Luke Allen, midfielder Tom Mitchell lobbed way too high from downtown and Brookes was sent clear at inside-left by substitute Brad Hall but dragged his low shot a few yards wide of the far stick.

Ciaran Lawless made several rushes too but he was unable to really test visiting gloveman Jack Hartopp, although a few set-pieces might have been more conclusive for Hampton, had it not been for the aerial defending of AFC’s Cutts and George Swain.

Hartopp was rarely harassed, punching one cross clear and following hesitant Rangers defending, he palmed a bouncing ball for a corner along the byeline, whilst being chased from behind.

Otherwise, Hampton were well served on their left-flank by Jack Chapman at left-back and of course Brookes, who also won several aerial challenges.

HALF-TIME & SOME RELIEF...

How Rangers appeared to play from a reporting point of view…

Twice AFC were unable to benefit from first period spills by Edwards, first from a Joe Gardner centre and then from a shot by influential midfielder Callum Regan who deserved to be in a winning team on the day. Regan also drove too high late in the match.

Fagbemi ballooned a shot, rugby-style but following a fine run and stepover by Alexander, only the fingertips of Edwards nudged the midfielder’s low centre behind Fagbemi, although he might have been flagged offside anyway. After the interval though, one decent left-booter by Fagbemi drifted just wide…

Regan’s header from skipper James Chappell’s corner before half-time was nearly smuggled over the goal-line at the left post by Cutts but apart from Alexander’s excellent drive which was flicked over the crossbar by Edwards, as already mentioned, it was Cutts, The Tank, the central defender, who threatened most of all for the guests, which rather tells the reader something.

Cutts saw a long free-kick turned away from under the right angle of crossbeam and vertical pole by Edwards, he nodded wide and then late on, nodded over the target from a pair of Chappell corners and another free-kick by Cutts from way downtown was smothered awkwardly aside by the sprawling Edwards.

AFC seemed to huff and puff in possession in deep zones but spluttered when it really mattered when reaching some 40 yards from the Hampton goal. Hence poor service was afforded Fagbemi, Liam Doyle and Gardner…

CHAPPELL HAS ALERTED EVERYONE TO THE BADGER SETT BENEATH THE GRASSY BANK...

Subsequent thought has made me wonder just how effective Cutts might have proved as a ‘number 10’ on the day…

The officials…

Consistency, that is all players can hope for in non-league football and indeed some of this was lacking during the game. An assistant apparently guessed which way one particular throw-in should be awarded, then a foul by the effective home defender Jason Albini led to no immediate advantage for AFC, so the referee cautioned the offender and awarded Hampton a throw-in… So, frustration for Rangers…

Doyle, for chucking the ball to the ground like he was celebrating a touchdown, was cautioned (an assistant had flagged for handball) and Bird was also booked by the referee, who also wasn’t averse to bellowing at anyone who disagreed with him…

HOW IT FEELS AFTER A 0-0 DRAW...

The final words…

Hardly enthralling, this game will not live in most folks’ memories but still I have muddled together some video action from my favourite vantage point, over the badgers’ sett, so anyone who wants to experience the better moments will be able to do so…

I won’t bother…

The Stalk, The Uncertainty & The Partial Retreat…

Through the reedy, parched undergrowth with steely

Determination the badger stalked,

Avoiding the feeding members of the clan

And testing the drift of odours with active snout.

Another’s approach was less than freely

Calculated and it clearly baulked

At perceived dangers and began

To sniff and listen and an uncertainty flout.

The third fidgeted whilst feeding and really

Close to my feet it fussily walked,

Until it paused, looked up then hurriedly ran

To safety, alleviating its caution and doubt…

HAMPTON FC v AFC COVENTRY RANGERS: THE MOWDOG'S MATCH PREVIEW...

Hampton FC v AFC Coventry Rangers:

A short preview by The Mowdog…

This August Bank Holiday Monday fixture brings together Kev Kingham’s newly promoted Rangers and their hosts Hampton FC in a Midland League clash.

THE BOGGERY...

I have seen both teams perform in pre-season already but not in competitive matches.

Hampton currently lie 12th in the league with 1 win and 3 defeats. They have a goal-difference of -2 and have amassed just 3 points.

Rangers, currently 4th in the league standings, have secured 3 wins, all at home and 1 loss on the road, their goal-difference is +1 and they have picked up an impressive 9 points.

Hampton began the season with a 3-1 loss at Fairfield Villa, for whom Dan Elwell grabbed a hat-trick. Norris Tobias scored the Hampton goal and Conor Bird was voted MVP.

ALLELY MAKES A SAFE CATCH v WAKE GREEN RECENTLY...

Back at The Boggery, Hampton beat Coventry Alvis 2-0, both goals being scored by Gedd Oldnall, whilst Jack Slevin was acclaimed as the MVP.

PLAYMAKER CAM SEIVWRIGHT IS ABOUT TO VOLLEY A FINE GOAL v WAKE GREEN...

A 1-0 loss at Bolehall Swifts followed, where the hosts also missed a spot-kick and it was significant that Hampton ‘keeper Matt Allely was voted the team’s MVP.

BIRD SCORES WITH A HEADER v WAKE GREEN...

On Saturday, Hampton were on the road again, this time at Earlswood Town, where they were defeated 2-1, due to a couple of defensive errors but eventually they deservedly pulled a goal back through Dan McGrath. Jason Albini was voted the team’s MVP.

Rangers suffered a tough loss in their first League 2 fixture, 4-1 at Alcester Town, who will surely be looking to challenge for the league title this term. Alpha Wurie scored AFC's consolation goal and he was also voted his team’s MVP.

THE RAPID WURIE...

Rangers netted four times in their next two fixtures, both at The Tech, despite the continued absence of recovering striker Connoll Farrell. A 4-3 win v Sutton United, in which Fola Fagbemi netted a brace, his second arriving in the 88th minute, also saw the combative Ryan Alexander and Curtis ‘The Tank’ Cutts grab goals. The MVP was skipper Jordan Powell, whose contributions for his manager have been so consistent over the years.

POWELL (10) IN ACTION v BALSALL & BERKSWELL...

A 4-2 home success over Inkberrow came courtesy of goals by Fagbemi, Wurie, Alexander and Rory Turnbull, although an unnecessary scare was suffered in added time when the guests nabbed their second goal… Wurie won his second MVP nomination for his efforts during this encounter…

WHEN HE'S NOT DUNKIN' (NOT DOUGHNUTS, A BASKETBALL...) FAGBEMI IS CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR OPPOSITION DEFENCES...

On Saturday, a third home match on the trot for AFC at The Tech saw visitors Barnt Green Spartak beaten 2-1, although Rangers were a goal behind after 8 minutes. Cutts notched an equaliser but Max Howard won the game with a couple of minutes to spare. I believe that Spartak voted Turnbull the MVP, although the Rangers’ fans gave their award to George Swain…

Video highlights of the contest, with full commentary, a selection of screenshots, some images and a full match report will be at themowdog.blogspot.com from Monday evening, although there might be a delay in the match report being completed, due to the fact that I am spending a couple of days in Liverpool…

The Mowdog…

MORETON RANGERS 1-3 BRISLINGTON FC: THE MATCH REPORT...

The Briz Do The Biz Before The Break…

Moreton Rangers 1-3 Brislington FC

The Mowdog’s thoughts…

This FA Vase tie was a strange one, for Brislington’s strong opening half was followed by rather an insipid second period, which allowed the previously poor Rangers back into the game.

From a dead and buried 0-3 deficit, the hosts nabbed a goal and then might just have nicked a couple more but for the crossbar and a lack of incision. The visitors had attacked at will during the opening period and forwards Dean Griffiths, Danny Dodimead and Jordan Scadding had threatened a number of times with their positive and quick running.

In truth though, the three goals conceded by Moreton were unconventional, yet in fairness home skipper Hedley Smart and the taller Morgan Ballinger held firm on a number of other occasions. Smart made several fine interventions and really, Rangers’ goalie Dan Hollings wasn’t overly busy, especially after the recess.

THE TOSS...

It seemed that Moreton were sluggish before the interval and apart from a first minute wild slash over the crossbar by Manny Singh, little offense was forthcoming. A few attacking attempts by Rangers as the game wore on when the often interesting Jamie Goodwin began to influence the proceedings, did offer some hope for the hosts, especially after Briz’s lively Dodimead had left the field hurt, whilst both skipper Ash Kington and Griffiths began to suffer from knocks. The guests had already been forced to replace Jack Allward before the game began and Josh Egan had started instead, wearing 12, although he too limped out of the contest…

However, the visiting Foxes held on without too much ado, despite cautions for Griffiths and Harry Tobin and they progressed to Round Two of the FA Vase and a home tie against Corsham Town.

All told, this game lacked atmosphere somehow, despite being an FA Vase tie and too many unforced errors made the affair a tough watch for the respective coaching staffs and the spectators on a warm Cotswolds afternoon.

THE GOALSCORERS FOR THE BRIZ: GRIFFITHS & DODIMEAD (IN BLUE, OF COURSE...)

That awful first period for Rangers…

Six times the Moreton defence was caught by counter attacks and goals were conceded from three of them. One break was nullified by an extremely questionable offside flag, on another occasion centre-forward Griffiths lobbed too high and from another clear run at goal by Dodimead, home goaltender Hollings managed to palm away an attempted chip.

However, the opening goal was slightly odd, in that Griffiths didn’t know much about the punt forward by Kington and, only just onside, the ball bounced upwards off the tall striker’s head. He swivelled quickly though and with several Rangers calling for an offside flag to nullify the attack, Griffiths lunged to hook a right-boot volley past Hollings and deep into the Rangers’ net.

0-1...

Not learning from the speedy Briz transitional play, off went Griffiths again but as he was about to shoot, a superb block by Smart stopped the ball but it then ran free. Griffiths shot again from 16 yards and this time the ball looped upwards off the advancing Hollings and over the gloveman, goalwards. Although Griffiths followed up, the ball took an outrageous spin and entered the net at the left post…

0-2...

Once again not learning from previous misdemeanours, Rangers allowed Dodimead to race clear too and his lob from downtown was perfectly judged over Hollings’ head and the ball bounced sweetly into the net for 0-3…

0-3...

A comfortable lead at the break for the visitors then, who also saw Jordan Ricketts fire too high, after good defending by the leaping Ballinger and a tip away by Hollings, then George Jones was given space to run forward and shoot wide from 20 yards. A low Dodimead centre was later nudged on by Jones then deflected by Hollings, home defender Will Middleton cleared the ball but straight to Ricketts, whose low drive was kicked from his goal-line by the same Rangers player.

Kington also drove too high following a short corner routine…

The untidy, fractured and disappointing second-half…

I moved my position to the right of the dugouts at half-time, for it seemed a sensible place to be, as Briz would be attacking in that direction. However, I was badly mistaken as the guests lost their threat, the game descended into a mash-mash of errors and stoppages which allowed Rangers to gain some confidence and typically, the main attacking action was at the end further away from me. Thanks for that…

IS THIS A LINE OF SCRIMMAGE BETWEEN THE DETROIT LIONS & THE BALTIMORE RAVENS?

However, once Scadding had been superbly denied by a Smart tackle and Briz defender Danny Barwood had headed over the home goal, Singh caused a worry for the outrushing visiting goalie George Dorrington and a fellow defender as the ball bounced near the 18 yard line. Goodwin though shot well wide after fastening onto the loose ball.

And then the hosts scored…

Striker Josh Burford, alongside the quiet Callum Briggs, really put himself about after the interval and he took possession from Goodwin’s low centre. He was duly partially tackled by Connor Bryant but managed to get in a shot anyway which Dorrington saved well, only for the ball to roll to replacement George Kirby, who shot low from the left-side of the 6 yard box into the vacant right side of the net.

1-3...

After that, Jones won a free-kick with what appeared to be the final phase of a triple jump attempt but Kington’s ensuing set-piece shot from downtown rolled wide. Smart trickled a close range effort wide for Rangers, home midfielder Matt Johnson drove just too high from distance, busy Briz defender Harry Tobin headed wide of the home goal and also shoved an angled centre into Hollings’ arms, whilst Griffiths had a strike chalked off for offside.

The best action though stemmed from a 25 yard drive by Goodwin (playing for Rangers who suffered a Badloss… Get it?) which slammed against the Brislington crossbeam…

There was a slight chance that Briz’s careless second period might be punished but in the end, Rangers were simply not penetrating enough, despite the promptings of Goodwin…

CAUTION FOR GRIFFITHS...

The final words…

A sunny afternoon, a good chat with Rangers’ Chairman and also the acting Moreton manager Steve Edghill, a pleasant outing to the Cotswolds but subsequently a disappointing spectacle overall…

GRIFFITHS & BALLINGER AT IT AGAIN...

Home substitute Josh Lefeuvre performed a lively cameo late on, combining well with Burrows but it was all too little, too late.

A shame Moreton’s programme production had been delayed too, for a few extra pounds would have been made from the sales thereof…

PLAYGROUND SCUFFLE WITH THE HEADMASTER TAKING CENTRE STAGE...
