MORETON RANGERS v BRISLINGTON FC: THE FA VASE MATCH PREVIEW...

The Mowdog’s Preview: Moreton Rangers v Brislington FC

(FA Vase First Qualifying Round, 27th August 2022)

This tie will be a fascinating one, bringing together an Hellenic League Division 1 team, the Rangers from Moreton-in-Marsh and the Western League Division 1 Briz, or Foxes from Brislington.

I actually visited Brislington FC back in 2013 when they defeated Truro City 3-2 in a 2nd Qualifying Round FA Cup tie but since then I have watched a few games at Moreton, the venue being a more easily navigable journey from Solihull…

MIKE RIMMER SCORES THE BRIZ'S WINNER v TRURO CITY IN 2013...

Much of this preview derives from the respective Full-Time websites but at least it offers an insight into how both teams have progressed thus far this season.

Hosts Rangers currently lie 12th of 19 teams in their league, having won 2 and lost 3 of their 5 matches. Their goal-difference is -1 and of course they have 6 points.

Guests Brislington are 5th of 22 teams in their league standings, having won 4 and lost 2 of their 6 encounters so far. Their goal-difference is +4 and they have amassed 12 points.

Moreton began their campaign with a 1-0 home win v Malmesbury Vics, where Callum Briggs grabbed the winner and Hedley Smart was voted MVP.

CALLUM BRIGGS...

Next came a 2-0 loss at FC Stratford, where the second goal was netted by a player I know well, Robbie Sone, whose brother is one of Pershore Town’s two goalies.

A 2-1 defeat at Long Crendon followed, where Richard Moss scored Rangers’ consolation goal and Connor Wagstaff was acclaimed the MVP.

CONNOR WAGSTAFF...

A close loss at current league leaders Milton United was next, the Rangers’ goals being scored by Wagstaff and replacement Josh Burford. Kian Burrows was voted as the team’s MVP…

MORETON'S GOALTENDER DAN HOLLINGS...

Last weekend, Moreton’s fortunes changed for the better with a 0-2 victory at Littleton, where Briggs, with a spot-kick and Jamie Goodwin netted the all important goals and Wagstaff was again the recipient of the MVP award. Littleton were encumbered by the dismissal of Mitch Butterworth, however…

Brislington opened their season with a 2-1 win at home against Wells City. Asa White and Danny Dodimead scored the goals, assisted by Ash Kington and Dean Griffiths respectively.

DANNY DODIMEAD...

However, the Foxes were beaten 0-3 at home by Nailsea & Tickenham next, before scoring twice in the final 17 minutes at Hallen for a 1-2 victory. The goals there were claimed by substitutes Jordan Scadding and Josh Egan.

JORDAN SCADDING...

A 6-0 win after the exchanges with Bristol Telephones, who perhaps got their lines crossed, or their minds were otherwise engaged, was secured by a brace from Dodimead and a goal each for Griffiths, Kington, White and replacement Egan. The Briz were really dialled up for that one and upwardly mobile again…

ASH KINGTON...

Another home win followed, 1-0 v Bishop Sutton, which came courtesy of Scadding’s 83rd minute goal, assisted by Kington, despite having Josh McLennon dismissed after only 20 minutes.

Last weekend saw a disappointing 4-2 defeat at mid-table FC Bristol, where the Briz’s goals were nabbed by Egan (a pair of penalties) which took his team back to 3-2 but Bristol made the game safe in the 80th minute. A hat-trick by Bristol’s Sacha Tong did the damage for Bristol and Griffiths was sin-binned for the Foxes during the match…

So, the FA Vase is upon us again and of course both of these teams will have their aspirations, for with a little good fortune in both the games played and the draws made for future rounds, anything is possible…

And of course, the FA Vase can be a nice little earner, too…

Video highlights of the game with full commentary, images, screenshots and a match report will be posted at themowdog.blogspot.com from Sunday morning…
