Early Scuffler Heralds England’s Winning Goal…
Crisp, brown laurel leaves from the fall
In a dimly lit corner of the garden lay
Across dry earth and in a conifer’s shade.
Early evening, a close and warm July day.
One badger suddenly showed early, scuffling
And tossing leaves asunder to feed. I was in thrall,
As it scavenged titbits in the tiny glade
And twisted its sinewy neck, rifling
With eager snout, bared claws arrayed.
Tensed for a hasty retreat, its black legs were displayed,
A marked contrast to its pelt of ash grey
But as quickly as the badger had appeared, snuffling,
Suddenly and silently, underground it slipped away…
