The Robin Setts The Stage…
It was surely there to sett the stage
For later in the day, when the badgers would perform
Their theatrical feeding, leaving no leaf unturned.
The robin, flicking a quizzical eye in my direction
Tasted the peanut fayre watchfully
And perched on the exposed rim
Of one of the holes…
It surely relished the scattered forage
Left for later in the day, when the badgers would conform
To their thespian image, their rewards earned.
The robin, flitting and bobbing between sunlight’s reflections
Sampled more peanuts there, cheekily,
Then flew through shadows, cool and dim
Above other gaping holes…

6th August 2022
Friday 5th August, lunchtime…
I had checked the water containers in the copse and a robin appeared, keeping an eye on me but feeding on a few peanuts I had scattered there for later in the day.
It stood on the edge of a sett, like it was on a stage set and the sun lit up its antics, like footlights in a badgers’ theatre…
