1970-71: WATCHING BRENTFORD...

Going To Watch Brentford

Mingling with busy commuters
On what felt like rickety rails in lines;
Clattering towards Brentford, as Bees climbed aboard,
Nervously checking the platform signs.

I only really recall sitting inside
A wooden grandstand at Griffin Park,
Wondering at the incendiary ramifications,
If a fag-end was dropped in the dark…

One Crewe player though was a non-conformist,
Not inclined to comply with set roles;
For he was an individual, a tricky ball-artist:
The inimitable, memorable, magical Stan Bowles…

Travelling from college digs in Bracknell to see games at Brentford on the train. Even then, the wooden grandstand awed me…

The Bees climbing aboard were of course Brentford fans who lived closer to London.

I saw six games in the 1970-71 season, two on Mondays, two on Saturdays & one each on a Tuesday and a Friday…

One of the Monday games was against Crewe, which Brentford won 3-1 with goals by Bence, Neilson and Ross and although Morrissey scored a consolation for Crewe, one player in particular caught my eye:
STAN BOWLES…

I would not forget him…
