Birds, Planes, Cars, Gunfire, Farm Machinery & A Broken Twig…
There really was no peace.
No silence, no tranquility
Near the badgers’ sett,
For the cacophony would not cease,
Highlighting the vulnerability
Of the mammals in the cete…
There was the birdsong which infiltrated
Through the woodland
And the harvesting machinery clanking
Across the farmland;
There was the drone of aircraft, which created
A curious grind
And the groan of vehicles accelerating,
Rudely unrefined;
There was even gunfire, which penetrated
The shading canopy
But the badgers, unperturbed, continued eating…
Yet a step on a twig
Or a foot on a leaf,
Sent the badgers scurrying,
Panicked by grief…

An incredible tangle of noises did not deter two badgers from gobbling up nuts laid out for them on the ground.
However, one barely audible crackle of a leaf or twig underfoot sent them rushing back to the sett…
