Droplets & Backward Steps
Grim, ruffled grey and sinister
The rainclouds dulled the stalks of harvested
Barley into sullen, short
Spikes, whilst inside the copse’s canopy, irregular
Droplets of rain fell askew, caught
By eager leaves, contesting,
Before onto my head deflecting
And falling at my rooted feet, taut…
Grim, muffled grey and sinister
The badger peered from its sett,
Barely seen but neck taut
And wary beneath the woodland canopy, angular.
Droplets of rain fell awry, caught
By coarse fur and feet, retreating,
Before its emergence, fleeting
Ended, its presence frustratingly short…

The badger approached very warily as initial raindrops fell through the trees.
It fed for a short time on peanuts but its innate concern forced backward steps and a return to its sett.
Strangely though, several cubs remained foraging, ignorant of the adult’s hesitancy.
