COVENTRY UNITED'S NEW 'HOME' GROUND: SPHINX DRIVE, by THE MOWDOG...

Sphinx Drive 2015…

Sunlit reds and greens infused
Sphinx Drive’s fading blues,
As its new tenants contrived
And foraged to create a home, a fortress
In which to assault their assailants…
Contests would now be regularly staged
At this less intimidatory of soccer venues,
For Coventry United’s surging, feisty Uncaged…

Interested and intrigued parties turned up
To partake of the fun-day, stalls and this inaugurate game;
The warm, genuine and cordial welcome afforded
To followers and the curious was the same…

Sunlit reds and greens refused
To lie down in defeat,
As the new tenants strived
And struggled to find victory, a win,
With which to aggrieve their adversaries…
Matches would now be played uncaged,
At this less familiar of soccer venues,
By Coventry’s emerging United, The Enraged…

August 2015

Coventry United’s first ‘home’ game at Sphinx Drive, coupled with a ‘fun day’ to entice new visitors was bathed in sunlight but The Cagemen were forced to battle for the three points by a resolute Lichfield City outfit…

Weathered Sphinx

Rain lashed through floodlit angle
Of shelter and stanchion,
Rasping upon glistening dugout roofs,
Drenching already sodden grass:
Turning collars up,
Tugging hoods on heads,
Shrugging shoulders tense and
Shattering aspirations like brittle glass.

Gale rushed across exposed stage
Of tenure and desolation,
Rattling upon corrugated shed’s metal,
Halting hurriedly punted kicks:
Teasing passes awry,
Twirling deliveries off course,
Spoiling accuracy’s intent and
Shredding creativity to odious risks…

Coventry Sphinx’s ground on a cold, windy, squally evening in November 2009. The er, grandstand was shaking like a leaf. Loved it.

Coventry Sphinxed

Like sinking at low level,
Sand shimmering on carved stone,
Near weathered pyramid tomb,
The Sphinx, parched by sun,
Under inadequate cover,
Proffering scintillating views
Of sharp, monumental icons,
Marks Giza’s ancient doom…

My Sphinx visit...

Like decking at three levels,
Paint lingering beneath scrawled messages,
From lovelorn teens,
The benches ached with damp,
Under adequate cover,
Offering stunning views
Of angled dugout roofs
And Stoke Heath’s urban scenes…

Coventry Sphinx’s home contrasts a little from Giza’s Sphinx’s home. Just a little…
Lovelorn teens?
