'FORTY WINKS': A POEM FOR MANI PARKES' PICTURE...

Forty Winks
(from the picture by Mani Parkes…)

The black-headed gull is watching
And is maybe suggesting
That the old sea-dogs dozing in their boat
Ought to be employed catching
More fish to bulge out that scattered net,
Although in truth, forty winks
Upon a sandy shore together and resting,
With wiggling toes and snuggling paws,
Does seem like a fine alternative, methinks…
Gaudy socks hang drying to port
And boots, having walked the plank, lie overboard
But one question lies unanswered:
Where did that gull acquire its tasty sardine,
It is with superior relish ingesting?
