Hues & Terraces, Blues & Boats
(from Anya Simmons’ painting)
It is as if Mevagissey, on a cloudy day
Has been wrung out
And tied and dyed the hues
Of rich summer blues
For sea and sky…
And terraced greens
Between dwellings which spy
Upon impending storms,
Intimidating tides,
Gales and vessels
Flung helplessly awry,
Tugging at moorings,
Wrenching at anchors, clenching
Lines and chains, drenching
Quays and fisherfolk,
Their fear to invoke…
For it is as if Mevagissey, on a stormy day
Has been dried out
And painted and enhanced,
The viewer appeased
And rightfully entranced…

Mevagissey has a working fishing harbour and this painting seems like it cuts through the detritus of low tide and ordinariness to bring out the undoubted beauty of the place…
