'LOOK DOWN': FROM SASHA HARDING'S PAINTING...

Look Down
(from Sasha Harding’s picture…)

“Do look at my good side…”
Says a seal, balanced upon the tip
Of a cactus-like
Rocky outcrop in the bay;

“It’s you in whom I wish to confide…”
Whispers another seal with quivering lip,
To a shellfish-like
Creature with nothing at all to say;

“What treasures have you spied?”
Asks the dog with tenuous grip,
Figurehead-like,
Of a third, quizzical seal of grey…

“Look down and be mystified…”
Advises the gull on a stowaway trip,
Quite bosun-like,
“For there, dividends will certainly pay…”

A friend, before I knew her, took her class of Primary children to Birmingham Museum and I taught the pupils about ancient Egypt.

She recalled me telling the kids to “Look up…” as they walked around the museum, for there were special things to see.

She never forgot that…

Hence the title of this poem: ‘Look Down’…
