'MOMENTOUS HUSH': FROM MANI PARKES' ARTWORK, 'CRABBING AT THE JETTY'...

Momentous Hush
(from Mani Parkes’ picture ‘Crabbing At The Jetty’)

A prone dog and a crab bucket form
Bookends. And the old folks blush
As their hands accidentally brush
On a busy Swanage quayside…
And all other life disappears,
For that wonderful touch
Ignites a momentary rush
Of emotion, side by side…
And their love slips like tears, warm,
Transcending the mayhem’s bustle, insincere,
So that their joy burns in a sensory hush…

Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bookends’ album was special to me as a young man and the song ‘Old Friends’ always made me think.

In the lyrics, the old friends were sat on a bench in a park, like bookends.

Not this couple…

The picture was made about crabbing in Swanage in Dorset, a place I know well.

My title is slightly different to that of Mani Parkes’ picture…
