The Perils Of Anti-Virus Walking
A bus passed with a driver inside
But no-one else and then
A road was crossed to avoid
A plodding woman, feet askance,
A regular sight hereabouts
And whose behaviour is devoid
Of good nature,
Her attitude sullen, her visage ashen…
A footpath taken with dog-walkers strewn,
But one chap herded five, all which
Harassed other mutts to distraction;
His concern was merely ignorance
And space on the wide path became scarce,
To distance oneself from the action:
Just a bearing left,
Close to the edge of a muddy ditch…
A short canal towpath was endured,
Climbing dry banks then waiting
For joggers, dogs and walkers
To pass and thus retain some distance;
Yet there were cyclists too,
Total towpath baulkers,
Who scattered all,
Their choice of route infuriating…
A pair of dogs met on a bridge,
Sniffed each other, then attacked and snapped
And barked and growled and pulled
On leads, as owners lost space and patience,
As well as control of their pets:
The planned route was poor, I mulled,
As a stile was climbed
To avoid being hopelessly trapped…
A trio of folks then approached
On Tythe Barn Lane, abreast,
Yet none shifted to make room to pass
And we were forced to nudge a farmer’s hedge
Just to sidle by all three;
I was irritated by their ignorance crass,
As the final 500 metres home were strolled,
A bile-like anger rising to my chest…

A walk past cottages, almost parallel with the old No Through Road section of Tythe Barn Lane (close to Dickens Heath), where there were more than a dozen dogs in a 15o metre section, most of them off leads…
Why the hell cyclists need to go along towpaths in these times of crisis, I’ll never understand, for they pass so many folks and within a metre or two of them, unavoidably.
The two dogs which attacked each other were held by an old bloke who thought it amusing and a young woman, who didn’t. Her male companion stood as she struggled to yank her animal clear…
Unbelievable.
No more canal walks, methinks…
