GERMOE WAR MEMORIAL, CORNWALL: A POEM...

Germoe War Memorial
(near Helston, Cornwall)

Bracken, brown in damp cluster
Dulled the promontory, yet
Seen from Mount’s Bay and across the land
From several miles away.
The trampled, tarnished gold,
Like bowed heads of devotees,
Worshipped its stone deity
Atop the formidable hill,
In the wind’s cruel chill…

The memorial to a pair of vile wars,
Fought for governmental ‘just cause’
And I mounted, trotting,
The height of Tregonning,
Saluting the stone,
Isolated,
Alone,
In muster,
On bracken, brown in autumnal cluster.

Pete Ray

Brilliant.

Memorial at the top of Tregonning Hill, where the hill fort Castle Pencaire once sat...

This one WOULD be seen…
